Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and

do not stop them; for it is to such as these that

the kingdom of heaven belongs"

Matthew 19:14

Community... Belonging...Acceptance

The education of children with special needs in Catholic schools requires acceptance, belonging, and community with open hearts and open minds.

At baptism, we are welcomed into our parish family. Parish members with disabilities and their families should be welcomed as they seek the benefits of a Catholic education. Our schools continue to strive to meet spiritual, educational, social, physical, and emotional needs of students so that they may develop to the best of their abilities.

Students and teachers alike are living examples of acceptance of people's differences. All students, with and without disabilities, learn that as a community, we value all God's people.

Perfect Wings

The Perfect Wings program is designed to support schools in maximizing the God given gifts and talents of all students enrolled in our schools.  Perfect Wings provides children of all abilities the opportunity to learn and grow together in an environment that promotes faith, acceptance, and helps children with disabilities to become successful learners.  The benefits to serving children together, rather than isolating children with special needs in separate classrooms, are numerous.  Firstly, typically developing children learn that children with special needs are similar to themselves in many ways.  Children learn that they have more similarities than differences, resulting in greater acceptance and, ultimately, less discrimination and prejudice toward people with disabilities.  Secondly, children learn from sharing their knowledge and skills with one another.  Students who have mastered skills can help teach those particular skills to students who are having difficulty learning concepts.  This builds self-esteem and helps both students to demonstrate mastery of skills and concepts.  The long-term results of inclusive education are better employment, great independence, and a less discriminatory community.  In addition, this is the current best practice locally and in the state of Kansas and nationally.
